Zimbabwean authorities have identified the American poacher who made a world famous lion suffer for 40 hours before being shot dead, skinned, and beheaded.
Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force (ZCTF) named Walter Palmer of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, as a primary suspect on Tuesday.
Palmer is a 55-year-old dentist who owns Palmer’s River Bluff Dental in Bloomington.
After being identified, Palmer released a statement, admitting to killing 13-year-old Cecil, who lived in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park with his six cubs.
“The saddest part of all is that now that Cecil is dead, the next lion in the hierarchy, Jericho, will most likely kill all Cecil’s cubs,” said Johnny Rodrigues with the ZCTF.
Palmer allegedly lured Cecil, who was a tourist attraction well-known for his black mane, out of the park using bait and shot him with a crossbow.
The injured lion fled the violent poachers, Palmer and some local guides, but was found 40 hours later, when he was shot dead and his pelt removed.
Two of Palmer’s accomplices have been arrested and are facing poaching charges.
The poachers even tried to smash Cecil’s GPS, which helped authorities track him down.
Apart from ZCTF, outraged social media users are also hunting down any information that can help find Palmer.
In 2008, pleaded guilty to federal poaching charges after killing a black bear in Wisconsin, 40 miles outside of the legal hunting zone.
Palmer was sentenced to one year of probation and fined $3,000 back in 2008 over killing a black bear in Wisconsin.
