Iranian foreign minister meets with Kuwaiti Emir

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif meets with Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in Kuwait City, July 26, 2015.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has met with Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah shortly after arriving in Kuwait on a tour of three neighboring countries.

Zarif and Sheikh Sabah met at the Seif Palace in the Kuwaiti capital, Kuwait City, on Sunday.

Zarif’s Kuwaiti counterpart Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled, the Arab country’s Ambassador to Tehran Majdi Ahmad Ibrahim Al-Dhafiri as well as a number of the Emir’s advisers were also present in the meeting.

During the meeting, Zarif and the Kuwaiti Emir discussed a recent agreement concluded by Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

The visit to Kuwait comes nearly one week after the 15-member United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously endorsed a draft resolution upholding the Iran-P5+1 agreement. The two sides had concluded the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – as the agreement is called – on July 14.

Nuclear breakthrough & regional diplomacy

The tour by the top Iranian diplomat comes as the Iranian administration of President Hassan Rouhani has on several occasions stressed that enhancing relations with Iran’s regional neighbors is a foreign policy priority.

The successful conclusion of the talks between Iran and the P5+1 group – the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany – has left Tehran with a freer hand to engage in diplomacy with regional countries, especially its Arab neighbors.

The Iranian foreign minister is scheduled to visit Iraq and Qatar after leaving Kuwait.

The Kuwaiti Emir visited Iran for the first time last June.
