US created atmosphere for ISIL's growth: International lawyer
US foreign policy in the Middle East has “intentionally created an atmosphere” in which groups like ISIL emerge and expand, an international lawyer in Indonesia says.
“Many US analysts, military officials and politicians now openly concede that the United States in fact trained and to varying degrees armed elements which became affiliated with either al-Nusra or ISIS,” said Barry Grossman, using another acronym for ISIL.
US President Barack Obama, along with several other senior US politicians, have acknowledged that in fact, “there is no moderate Syrian opposition,” Grossman told Press TV on Sunday.
He was referring to a report that the Pentagon has begun training a new group of the so-called moderate militants to fight ISIL Takfiri terrorists in Syria and Iraq.
The ISIL terrorists, who were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government, now control large parts of Iraq and Syria.
Grossman went on to say that “US efforts to combat ISIS itself have at best been half hearted.”
“People have to be perversely naive to believe that the US can create, train and arm any fighting force in Syria without that support flowing directly to ISIS or al-Nusra,” the international lawyer noted.
“If the US truly wants to support the fight against ISIS and al Nusra, then it can only do so by either not involving itself in these matters or by supporting the Syrian government and the coalition formed by Iran, Iraq, and regional militia forces which are truly committed to fight ISIS,” he suggested.
Earlier this month, the US military announced it would send its first batch of trained militants into Syria in the next several weeks to fight ISIL.
The announcement was made as American and allied forces were finishing the training of the first group of so-called “moderate” militants in Turkey.
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011. The United States and its regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey - are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
