Russian president approves destruction of banned foods

Russian President Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved a plan to destroy illegal products imported from countries that are on Moscow’s sanctions list.

Putin agreed with the plan proposed by Russian Agriculture Minister Alexander Tkachyov during a cabinet meeting on Friday.

"I would like to use this opportunity to ask you and the Russian government to do everything possible… to destroy all the products that are illegally entering the Russian border — right there on the spot," Tkachyov said during the meeting, adding that the current law requires all banned products to be sent back to their place of origin.

"Okay. Let's accept the minister's proposal. I am asking the administration and the government to work with lawyers and to come up with the appropriate solutions," Putin replied.

The West has imposed several rounds of sanctions against Russia over accusations that Moscow is involved in a deadly crisis in neighboring Ukraine, which broke out when Kiev launched military operations to crack down on pro-Russian forces in eastern Ukraine last year. Russia has denied the allegation.

In a tit-for-tat measure, Moscow imposed food bans on the United States, the European Union, Australia, Canada and Norway last August.
