At least nine people have lost their lives in flash flooding and a summer storm in the Iranian provinces of Tehran and Alborz.

A severe storm killed four in Tehran Province while flooding in Alborz Province left five others dead on Sunday, said Head of the Relief and Rescue Organization of Iran’s Red Crescent Society (IRCS) Nasser Charkhsaz in an interview with IRNA on Monday.

He said that nine other people are also unaccounted for in Alborz.

The official added that the number of fatalities may rise, noting that rescue teams have been dispatched to the areas affected by flooding and storm.

An unexpected summer storm and heavy rain struck the Iranian capital and its suburbs Sunday afternoon.

Combined with heavy rain and lightening, the strong winds battered the northern, northwestern and western parts of the capital.

The fierce storm, packing winds of up to 80 kilometers per hour, brought down trees and power lines and damaged buildings.

A flash flood, triggered by torrential rain, swept cars off the busy mountainous Chalous Road and into the nearby Karaj River in Alborz Province.

The flood caused widespread damage and destroyed infrastructure in nearby villages.

Some villages were inundated by water and all access routes are cut off. A power outage in the area hampered rescue efforts in the dark Sunday night.
