Iran Davis Cup team faces relegation into Asia/Oceania Group III

Iranian tennis player Anousha Shahgholi

Iran’s national Davis Cup team is facing the threat of relegation to the third division of the Asia/Oceania Zone with Iranian tennis players’ performances at Group II relegation play-offs of the 2015 Davis Cup in Tehran not being up to the mark.

On Saturday evening, the Kuwaiti side, which consisted of Abdullah Maqdes and Mohammed al-Ghareeb, trounced the Iranian team, comprising Anousha Shahgholi and Shahin Khaledan, in straight sets (6-0, 6-1 and 7-6) in a doubles match played at Tehran’s Enghelab Sport Complex.

The Iranian athletes will now take on their Kuwaiti opponents on Sunday evening, and their results will determine whether Iran will remain in the Asia/Oceania Zone Group II or depart for the lower tier.

Iran’s Mohsen Hosseinzadeh, 24, will compete against right-handed Maqdes in an individual showdown, while 25-year-old Iranian sportsman Khaledan will face Ghareeb, who is 35 years old.

On Friday, the first day of the tournament in Enghelab Sport Complex, Khaledan clinched a 3-1 (4-6, 6-2, 6-0 and 7-5) victory over Maqdes.

Later in the day, Hosseinzadeh suffered a 3-1 defeat in a match played against Ghareeb. The Iranian sportsman led 6-2 in the first set, before succumbing 6-7, 3-6 and 4-6 in the second to final sets.

The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's lawn tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually in a knock-out format. Iran competed in its first Davis Cup in 1962.
