South Korean spy agent found dead near Seoul
A South Korean intelligence agent has been found dead near the capital, Seoul, according to police.
A police official said the 46-year-old National Intelligence Service (NIS) agent, whose name has not been released, was found dead in his car on Saturday in Yongin City, just south of the capital, Seoul.
The police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added that next to the agent’s body, there was a note that reportedly said the NIS had procured advanced spying software to eavesdrop on its citizens’ mobile and computer communications.
The source further added that details surrounding the death of the agent and the note were not made public at the behest of his family.
NIS, which has a history of illegal tapping of citizens’ private conversations, has refrained form commenting on the agent’s death as well as the note.
Earlier this month, WikiLeaks organization released confidential emails showing that a South Korean agency had purchased spying software from an Italian firm named Hacking Team.
On Tuesday, NIS admitted that it had purchased the spying software in 2012 from the Italian company, claiming that it wanted to use the program to monitor North Korean spies, and also for research purposes.
On Thursday, the country’s Supreme Court ordered a retrial of a former NIS director for his role in overseeing an online smear campaign against a main opposition figure in the country’s 2012 presidential election.
Two other former NIS directors have already been convicted of illegal spying activities involving hundreds of political, media and business figures in the country.
