Two Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike for about 25 days: Report
Two Palestinian prisoners have been on a hunger strike for almost 25 days to protest against their continued illegal detention without trial in Israeli jails, a report says.
The Palestinian Authority’s Committee of Prisoners’ Affairs (CPA) said in a Saturday report that one of the prisoners, Palestinian lawyer Muhammad Allan from the occupied West Bank city of Nablus, has been on a hunger strike in the last 25 days.
The other prisoner, Uday Isteiti from the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank, went on a hunger strike 24 days ago, according to the report.
Allan is kept at Israel’s Ayala Prison, while Isteiti is held at Eshel Prison, the report said, adding that both are protesting Israel’s practice of administrative detention.
Administrative detention is a sort of imprisonment without trial or charge that allows the Israeli regime to incarcerate Palestinians for up to six months. The detention order can be renewed for indefinite periods of time.
The report also noted that 60 Palestinian prisoners had decided to boycott Israeli courts from July 1, adding that “all 484 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails without trial will join the boycott.”
Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails are increasingly resorting to hunger strikes to protest both their indefinite detention with no charges and being denied the right to a legal trial.
