Press TV has interviewed Ibrahim Mousavi, a political commentator based in Beirut, to discuss possible UN plans to put an end to the crisis in Syria.

Following is a rough transcription.

Press TV: Latest out of the UN is that possibly there is a new proposal that could end this conflict in Syria. Are you optimistic?

Mousavi: To tell you the truth it is not about being optimistic or pessimistic. I believe the situation in Syria is very delicate, very sensitive and it is very complicated at the same time. Here you are not talking about a simple issue; you are talking about two projects that are colliding and clashing against each other, and you are talking about so many different regional and international players that are in.

That is why it would be very difficult to try to fathom or try to have a vision about what is really going to happen. There is continuation of initiatives and proposals and peace plans coming from this or that side. We have heard, read and seen so many different conferences, so many different congregations and meetings taking place here and there, but to tell you the truth because there are many different players in the Syrian issue, there are many players who are meddling their fingers amid the crisis, it would be difficult at this moment and this time to see an outcome for the crisis actually.

This is another attempt. I do not want to underestimate the initiatives. I do not want to underestimate the efforts that are being conducted by Staffan de Mistura. I would say it is all needed at this point of time in order to make the continuation of initiatives, where it could lead to a certain place where all would be really convinced about a political solution.

To tell you the truth now many regional players, you can talk about Turkey, you can talk about (Persian) Gulf countries namely Qatar and Saudi Arabia, they are self-funneling a lot of support and military aid to the Takfiri groups, supporting them and giving them an upper hand from time to time. That is why they feel that they could do something.

Recently when they had like an upper hand in Idlib they thought that they are going to tip the balance, they thought that their new offensives that took place in Dara’a, Aleppo, Hasakah [they thought that] they can do something, but it turned out that the Syrian army and the resistance groups were able to defeat them and blow them a devastating strike.

That is why I believe this is one of the proposals that could lead to a certain point where we could see a real tangible initiative later on, but at this very moment, I would say it is very difficult to talk about a solution or something that could be decisive in solving the problem.

Press TV: Let us look at what you said; on the one hand, you talked about the defeat in certain areas of Syria where those fighting the Syrian government thought that they have the upper hand recently. However, at the same time that this is happening, we have seen that the United States not back off or back away from their proposal once again, on supporting what they call the “moderate” elements and again training this. What is it about the United States? Do you think that they believe that this can still be won militarily or is it just a matter of trying to make sure that this area is in constant chaos?

Mousavi: The United States of America is like marginalizing the whole issue in such a sense it doesn’t give any importance what is really happening but to serve its own interests. They are not doing anything in order to bring about any solution.

We know very well that the Takfiri groups, the so-called ISIL or Daesh, Nusra group, they are under the eyes of the America’s stepdaughter, Israel, in Golan Heights. When you have large and huge convoys of military aid coming from Iraq to Syria and going from Syria to Iraq, it is under the eyes of Americans and they are not doing anything in order to target them.

That is why I believe they are happy about what is happening. The Israelis are very happy because it is a war of attrition. It is like consuming many of the resources of Syria and this would be an optimal situation for them to see the weakness of Syria. That is why they don’t care for what is really happening otherwise they would have done something about it.
