The observance of fasting during Ramadan is an expression of a fundamental value, one of the five pillars of Islam, uniting Muslims all over the world.

Different groups of Muslims follow Prophet Muhammad’s practice of abstaining from drink and food during daylight hours accompanied by worship and good conduct.

Social bonds are strengthened in an environment of self-reflection, communal worship and charity. The spirit of Islam in Ramadan captured in the verse that “The most honored by Allah amongst you are those best in Taqwa.”

Ramadan is intended to uplift rich and poor, man and woman, elders and children, without any discrimination. Religious piety is also aimed at reinforcing the unity of Muslims despite the challenges facing them globally.

In this episode of Islamic Awakening we ask: how can Ramadan become a period of unity among Muslims?
