Director of US Office of Personnel Management Katherine Archuleta has resigned after the breach of private information of millions of American federal employees.

Archuleta stepped down on Friday after being in the position for about two years.

Her resignation came one day after she said she was "committed to the work that I am doing."

Growing pressure from lawmakers of both political parties forced her to personally submit her resignation to President Barack Obama.

The deputy director for management at the Office of Management and Budget, Beth Cobert, has been named as acting director at OPM.

"It's quite clear that new leadership, with a set of skills and experiences that are unique to the urgent challenges that OPM faces, are badly needed," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.

The Obama administration announced in the initial hack records of 4.2 million people were stolen earlier this year and in a second hack the Social Security numbers and other sensitive information of over 21.5 million were stolen.

The massive hack is believed to the biggest in the history of the United States.

According to Archuleta, the OPM's aging systems, some of which are 30 years old, were behind the data breaches.

"I conveyed to the president that I believe it is best for me to step aside and allow new leadership to step in, enabling the agency to move beyond the current challenges and allowing the employees at OPM to continue their important work," she said.
