Gunmen kill three people, injure one in Baltimore

Baltimore police say four people have been shot, three fatally, near the University of Maryland, Baltimore, campus.

Three people were killed and one person was wounded during a shooting near a university campus in Baltimore, Maryland, the largest independent city in the United States.

Two suspects emerged from two vans and opened fire at a group of people near the University of Maryland’s Baltimore campus on Tuesday, Baltimore police said.

Police said two of those shot were male and two were female. Both of the men and one of the women died from their gunshot wounds.

A fourth victim, a female, walked into a hospital with a gunshot wound and was later listed in stable condition, according to police.

Students at the University of Maryland were advised to use caution in the area, a statement by the university said. There is no word whether any of the victims were students at the school.

It is the second shooting at the location in just five days, the Baltimore Sun reported. It said shots were fired into a vehicle travelling in the same location on July 2, wounding a passenger.

Police have struggled to stop the growing violence in the city since the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, a black who died in police custody on April 19, a week after an encounter with police left him severely injured.

His death set off weeks of unrest in Baltimore and prompted Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to put the city under a five-day curfew.

A total of 43 people were killed in Baltimore during May, making it the deadliest month in over 40 years.

It was the worst homicide rate for the troubled city since 1972, when 45 people were killed, according to the Baltimore Sun.
