The second-in-command of the ISIL terrorist group in Afghanistan has been killed, Afghan intelligence officials say.

The Afghan National Directorate of Security (NDS) announced on Monday that Gul Zaman was killed in a US assassination drone strike in the Achin district of eastern Nangarhar province near the border with Pakistan, the Tolonews news channel reported on Tuesday.

“Based on our information, Daesh (ISIL)'s number two in Afghanistan named Gul Zaman was killed along with his deputy Jahanyar and five others in a drone strike,” The news agency quoted NDS spokesman Haseeb Sediqi as saying.

His death was confirmed by the special unit of security institutions that were formed on July 2 to counter ISIL affiliates in the country, Sediqi further added.

According to some media reports, the ISIL Takfiri terror group has started recruiting militants in some regions of the violence-wracked country.

The United States launches targeted killings through drone strikes in Yemen, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Somalia.

While Washington claims the targets of the attacks are militants, witnesses maintain that in most cases civilians have been the victims of the airstrikes.

The war-ravaged country is experiencing bloodshed more than 13 years after the United States and its Western allies invaded the country in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.
