Deep divisions’ remain among P5+1 over Iran nuclear deal: Journalist

Pepe Escobar

One of the main disagreements in nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries are the US congressional sanctions against Tehran, an international journalist says.

There are currently “deep divisions” among the P5+1 group of countries negotiating with Iran in the Austrian capital of Vienna, said Pepe Escobar, a correspondent with Asia Times Online.

“The main sticking point at the moment is the end of the congressional arms embargo,” Escobar told Press TV on Tuesday.

Representatives from Iran and the P5+1 group of countries have been holding crunch talks in Vienna over the past ten days to hammer out a final comprehensive deal.

Last week, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met Pepe Escobar, along with journalists Sharmine Narwani, Ali Hashem and Gareth Porter for a private conversation at the Palais Coburg in Vienna minutes after his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Iran and the P5+1 group -- Russia, China, France, Britain, the US and Germany – are negotiating to work out a final agreement aimed at ending the longstanding Western dispute over the Islamic Republic’s civilian nuclear work.

Diplomats extended their discussions by a week when they missed their goal of a pact by June 30, after passing previous deadlines in July 2014 and last November.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says "new progress" has been made in the course of nuclear negotiations.
