Iranian female shooters win bronze at 2015 Universiade

Iranian female sports shooters have exhibited a commendable performance at the 28th edition of Universiade in South Korea, and managed to grab the bronze medal to raise the country’s total medal count at the tournament.

On Monday, the Iranian squad, consisting of Maryam Talebi, Najmeh Khedmati and Mahlagha Jambozorg, ended its campaign in the women's 50m prone shooting competitions at the Naju Jeollanamdo Shooting Range in South Korea’s southwestern city of Gwangju, located some 330 kilometers (205 miles) south of the capital, Seoul, with the total points of 1,851.4.

Talebi collected 619.4 points, 19-year-old Khedmati 617.4 points, and Jambozorg 614.6 points apiece to give Iran a third place finish.

The Thai outfit was the top-ranked shooting team in the contests with 1,864.4 points, followed by second-place Chinese, who amassed 1857.5 points. South Korea stood fourth with 1,850.2 points. 

Meanwhile, Iran’s national university students’ volleyball team has exhibited dazzling performances at the 2015 Universiade, and earned its third straight convincing victory in the international sports event.

The Iranian outfit, which had defeated Switzerland 3-1 (25-13, 23-25, 25-22 and 25-16) in its previous Pool B match on July 4, edged past Thailand 3-2 (23-25, 25-22. 26-28, 25-17 and 15-13) in Palma Gymnasium on Monday.

Iran will take on Russia at 8 p.m. local time (1100 GMT)  its last preliminary round showdown.

The Iranian volleyball players routed the Canadian side 3-0 (25-19, 25-10 and 25-13) in their opener on July 2.

The 2015 Summer Universiade, which marks the 28th edition of the sports event, opened in the city of Gwangju on July 3, and will run until July 14.

More than 9,000 student athletes and officials from over 170 countries are taking part in the championships.

Iranians sportsmen and women are in action across eight sports. They are competing in artistic gymnastics, soccer, volleyball, taekwondo, shooting, archery, athletics and rowing.

The last edition of the Universiade was held in the Russian city of Kazan. Over 10,400 university athletes from 162 countries participated in 13 mandatory and 14 optional sports, making the 2013 Universiade the biggest ever games in the history of the event.
