Hackers expose 400 GB of data from Italian spying firm

Hackers expose around 400 GB of confidential data belonging to a major spying company in Italy.

The Hacking Team, a major spyware company based in Italy, has reportedly had a large amount of its internal data leaked and published online.

Reports on Monday showed that hackers managed to breach more than 400 gigabytes of data of the Milan-based company, including lots of documents exposing its financial dealings with some rights-abusing governments around the world.

According to the Corriere della Sera newspaper, hackers defaced the company’s logo, changed it to “Hacked Team” and posted internal documents. Other reports suggested a twitter account belonging to the firm was also taken over.

Hacking Team has been known for its controversial dealings with various governments, most of them having dodgy rights records, including Bahrain.

Rights groups, including the Reporters Without Borders, have sharply criticized the company for providing law enforcement agencies and the governments with the Da Vinci malware surveillance software, saying it has played the role of the Enemy of the Internet since it was founded in 2003.

Officials in the Hacking Team have yet to comment on the leak which is expected to cause them a huge loss of face. The webpage of the company was also out of access after the attack happened.

The data exposed on Monday shows that the Hacking Team has also been engaged in commercial transactions with entities that have reportedly used the Da Vinci to spy on journalists.

Once among the top specialists in surveillance technology, the Hacking Team may now learn how it feels to have one's confidential data exposed to the world.
