UK family wants police grilled over girl’s murder case

The family of a slain British schoolgirl is demanding an inquiry into whether the police knew her murderer had such a previous conviction.

The family of 14-year-old Alice Gross, who was killed in London last summer, is asking the coroner to investigate the reason police were not aware of the criminal past of her killer, Arnis Zalkalns.

Should the coroner agree, the inquest that is set to take place at the West London Coroner's court will not only look at the cause of Alice's death, but also the many issues surrounding it.

Arnis Zalkalns killed the girl from Hanwell in West London last August.

It has also emerged that the builder from Latvia served time in prison in his native country for the murder of his wife. Zalkalns was found hanged after it emerged he was the prime suspect in the murder of the 14-year-old.

Now the human rights organization, Liberty, is representing the family of Alice Gross.

Their solicitor Emma Norton has said, “The state has a positive obligation to protect people from a known risk, in this case someone who was a violent offender. What happened to Alice appears to have come about, in part, because the authorities knew nothing about this man.”

The police are being heavily criticized for the way they handled this situation.

The Scotland Yard has said the police force did not check to see if Zalkalns had any convictions overseas as it was not their policy to do so and the Metropolitan police are not accepting any responsibility for the girl’s death.

A full investigation into the death of the 14-year-old schoolgirl is slated for later this year.
