IAEA delegation in Iran for talks: Iranian official

Members of a delegation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) upon their arrival in Tehran, July 6, 2015

A five-member delegation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has arrived in Tehran for talks with Iranian officials, spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi says.

Speaking to IRIB News on Monday, Kamalvandi said that the IAEA delegation has traveled to Iran to discuss the details of the understandings reached between Iran and the UN nuclear agency during a recent visit by the agency’s chief Yukiya Amano to the country.

Kamalvandi added that, during its day-long stay in Tehran, the IAEA team will hold talks with officials from the AEOI and Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) as well as the country’s permanent representative to the agency.

The Iranian nuclear official said that the IAEA’s Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Safeguards Tero Varjoranta, and the chief coordinator at the IAEA, Cornel Feruta, are among the delegates visiting Iran.

The IAEA team will leave Tehran early Tuesday, Kamalvandi said.

Amano paid a visit to Iran on Thursday and held talks with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Secretary of SNSC Ali Shamkhani.

In a statement issued on Friday after the visit, Amano said Iran and the IAEA have a “better understanding” in some areas but added that more work is required for the resolution of outstanding issues, including the so-called possible military dimensions (PMD).

Iran and the P5+1 – the US, the UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany – are currently negotiating to reach a comprehensive deal over Iran's nuclear program.
