Donald Trump's Mexico remarks 'offensive and inaccurate'

Republican US presidential candidate Marco Rubio has denounced Donald Trump's recent remarks about Mexico and immigrants as “offensive and inaccurate.”

During his presidential campaign announcement on June 16, billionaire businessman and reality television star Trump emphasized the need to curtail immigration from the southern border and slammed Mexican immigrants for "bringing crime" to the US.

“[Mexico is] sending people that have lots of problems, and they are bringing those problems to us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists,” Trump said.

“Trump’s comments are not just offensive and inaccurate, but also divisive,” said Rubio, a Hispanic member of the 14-strong Republican presidential field.

“Our next president needs to be someone who brings Americans together – not someone who continues to divide,” Rubio said in a statement issued on Friday.

“Our broken immigration system is something that needs to be solved, and comments like this move us further from – not closer to – a solution,” the Cuban-American senator said.

The former Florida governor Jeb Bush, the GOP frontrunner whose wife was born in Mexico, said on Saturday that he was personally offended by Trump's “ugly” remarks.

"I don't think he represents the Republican Party, and his views are way out of the mainstream of what Republicans think," Bush said after attending Fourth of July parades in Amherst and Merrimack, New Hampshire.

"No one suggests that we shouldn't control our borders - everybody has a belief that we should control our borders," he said. "But to make these extraordinarily ugly kind of comments is not reflective of the Republican Party. Trump is wrong on this."

In spite of criticism from Republicans and companies threatening to cut business ties to Trump, he has defended his controversial comments.

He told Fox News on Friday that the alleged shooting death of a 32-year-old woman by an immigrant in San Francisco was one more example of why America must secure its borders.

“This is an absolutely disgraceful situation and I am the only one that can fix it. Nobody else has the guts to even talk about it,” he said.
