Charleston suspect was in contact with supremacists

Dylann Roof had been in contact with white supremacists online.

The US man, who killed nine African Americans in a South Carolina church last month, had been in contact with white supremacists online, federal and local authorities say.

On June 17, Dylann Roof, 21, joined the Bible study at the Emanuel AME Church and stayed an hour with the eventual victims before opening fire on them. Eight African Americans died on the spot and another was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Investigators used the information they had gathered in order to determine where Roof received his inspiration and/or whether anyone else should face charges in connection with the mass killings.

“To understand what happened, you have to understand who he talked to and who may have known what,” The New York Times cited a law enforcement official as saying.

The authorities have so far determined that people, who Roof had contact with, were aware that he held some racist beliefs.

These people would be prosecuted should the authorities find they knew about his plan.

The authorities gathered information about Roof's associates using his possessions including his cellphone and computer, which were taken to the FBI laboratories in Quantico, Va.

The investigators showed that at least some of Roof’s communications with the hate groups were made online.

President Barack Obama has said the shooting incident shows the need for vigilance against racism.

"The apparent motivations of the shooter remind us that racism remains a blight that we have to combat together," Obama said.

The attack has resumed the debate about racism and gun violence in the US amid harsh criticism against US police forces for fatally killing African Americans.
