Iran’s national volleyball team has failed to book a berth in the Final Six of the 2015 Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) World League after powerhouse Poland registered a hard-fought home victory over the American side.

On Friday, the hosts went to great lengths to emerge victorious in the pool B five-set game played at Poland’s biggest indoor arena, the Tauron Arena Krakow, with the final score of 3-2 (19-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 15-12).

The US squad started the match with vim and vigor, dominating throughout the first set and maintaining a gap as wide as 8 points. Americans finally closed the set at 25-19 despite some late fight back from Poland.

Poland counted on its home fans that had come to cheer for their team. The Polish volleyball players could eventually establish themselves in the second set, and bring the game under control.

The Poles piled up a considerable advantage of four points before Americans hit back to draw level at 15-all. A point-for-point continued through 19-19, after which Poland grabbed three points in a row, and won the second set 25-22.

The third set was a close contest all the way through 20-20, but the US side closed it off at 25-21 at last.

The hosts regained dominant performance in the fourth set of the game, and a hit by Mateusz Mika ended it at 25-20.

Finally, Mika sealed Poland’s victory of the match and the 2015 FIVB World League Final Six qualification with a spike for 15-12.

Earlier on Friday, national Iranian volleyball team had picked up a home victory against Russia and won the pool B match at the 12,000-seater hall of the Azadi Sports Complex in western Tehran in consecutive sets (25-21, 25-21 and 25-21).
