US Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton says she is hopeful that her country and other world powers will be able to reach a comprehensive nuclear agreement with Iran.

“I so hope that we are able to get a deal in the next week that puts a lid on Iran’s nuclear weapons program because that’s going to be a singular step in the right direction,” Clinton said on Friday.

The former secretary of state made the comments in New Hampshire while the nuclear negotiations are under way in the Austrian capital city of Vienna.

Earlier on Friday, US Secretary of State John Kerry noted that all sides were making a genuine effort to reach a final deal before Tuesday's deadline.

“We have some tough issues, but there’s been a genuine effort by everybody to be serious about this and to understand the time constraints that we’re working under,” Kerry said.

He added that all sides were working “very diligently all day in order to maximize progress” and with “a great sense of purpose.”

Clinton, who announced her second bid for the White House in April, was serving as secretary of state during President Barack Obama's administration.

Clinton, the wife of former president Bill Clinton, won a US Senate seat from New York in 2000.

She later ran and lost the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination to Obama.
