Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has met with the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Tehran, amid parallel diplomatic efforts in Vienna aimed at reaching a final deal on the Iranian nuclear issue.

The two met in Tehran on Thursday. According to a statement by the IAEA on Wednesday, Yukiya Amano has traveled to Tehran for talks with senior Iranian officials over ongoing cooperation between the Islamic Republic and the UN nuclear watchdog.

Amano’s visit to Tehran is also aimed at speeding up the resolution of all outstanding issues related to Iran’s nuclear activities, according to the statement.

The statement further said the IAEA chief’s trip comes in the context of the agency’s continued engagement with Tehran and the P5+1 states, which are working to reach a comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear case.

Earlier in the day, Amano sat down with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani for talks over Tehran-IAEA cooperation.

Amano had earlier in the week met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and U Secretary of State John Kerry in Vienna, Austria, on the sidelines of the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries - the US, the UK, Germany, France, Russia and Germany - for a final deal on Tehran's nuclear program by July 7.

‘Constructive and positive talks’

Later on Thursday, Iranian Ambassador to the IAEA Reza Najafi described as positive and constructive Amano's meetings with the Islamic Republic officials, saying the visit paved the ground for outlining the approaches and addressing the concerns of Tehran and the agency in a climate of interaction and understanding.

“In the course of the meetings, the two sides reached a general understanding about the timetable [and] the continuation of cooperation by taking into account Iran and the agency’s considerations for expediting the resolution of past issues,” Najafi said.

He added that coordination meetings will be held soon between the two sides to determine the details and the timetable for measures at the expert level.
