US military making provocative moves against Russia, China: Analyst

“It’s apparently impossible for the US capitalist system to conceive of living in peaceful co-existence with other major powers,” said Wilayto.

The US military is making “very provocative actions” around the world to threaten Russia and China as it deals with a declining economy and growing social unrest and poverty, says a journalist and anti-war activist in Virginia.

“It’s apparently impossible for the US capitalist system to conceive of living in peaceful co-existence with other major powers,” said Phil Wilayto, an editor at Virginia Defender newspaper.

“The leaders of the United States believe that if they are not in charge, someone else will be and they will be at disadvantage and so they strive for hegemony,” Wilayto told Press TV on Thursday.

He made the comments following a report that shows America's new military strategy singles out states like China and Russia as aggressive and threatening to US security interests, while warning of growing technological challenges and worsening global stability.

The report released Wednesday by General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, warns of a "low but growing" probability of the United States fighting a war with a major power, with "immense" consequences.

Wilayto said other nations have realized that the United States is no longer the only power in the world as emerging nations like China and Russia continue to expand their economic and military power.

“People are not willing to accept the fact that the United States has the right to call other shots and be in complete control everywhere; at the same time people in the United States have no interests in going to another war, they’re sick of war,” he noted.

Wilayto warned that there is a growing sense of insecurity in the US government over the country’s increasing levels of social unrest and poverty.

“The United States government is feeling insecure [so] it’s trying to reassert itself in various areas of the world and it could be a dangerous situation because there’s nothing more dangerous than a wounded beast.”

“Economically, the United States is not strong – militarily, it’s very strong -- so you have this huge military apparatus with not a great economy to sustain it and it’s prone to military adventures and aggression around the world,” he added.
