Amnesty International has released a new report on human rights violations in Indian-controlled Kashmir. As Press TV's Syed Ali Safvi reports, the document highlights and slams grave human rights violations committed by Indian forces in the region.

Amnesty has demanded an end to human rights violations by government forces in Indian-controlled Kashmir, a region marred by decades of violence that has left thousands of people dead.

The London-based human rights watchdog released the report on Wednesday, mainly focusing on the controversial law dubbed the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, that gives excessive and unbridled powers to Indian forces leading to a culture of impunity.

The report features interviews with families of the victims and analyses official and legal documents particularly the cases involving request for prosecution.

It also accuses India of neglecting international laws and its own constitution by denying the rights to equality and justice to Kashmiris. It calls on the Indian Prime minister to repeal the controversial law in order to end decades of injustice in the region.

The report recommends that the Indian government ensure all violations allegedly committed by its forces in the region are investigated by independent and impartial authorities and the perpetrators are brought to justice in civilian courts.

Hundreds of security personnel are facing charges of murder, rape, and arrest in Kashmir, but prosecution against them has been hindered thanks to the controversial act.
However, the Indian government claims it IS prosecuting the security forces involved in human rights violations. The government has called for zero tolerance regarding human rights abuses in Kashmir.

Amnesty’s report has castigated New Delhi over rampant human rights abuses and the lack of accountability in Kashmir, calling for revocation of the draconian legislation and justice to the victims of human rights violations.
