Egyptians mark the second anniversary of the June 30 protests that led to the overthrow of former president Mohammed Morsi in a coup. However, for the supporters of the govenrment, a state of mourning prevail on this day over the assassination of Egypt's state prosecutor Hisham Barakat .

June 30 is the anniversary of Mohammad Morsi’s presidential inauguration in 2012. But just a year after completing a his troubled tenure, nationwide protests filled Egyptian streets with the aim of forcing Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood group out of power.

However, on the June 30 anniversary, this time, the assassination of the Prosecutor General took center stage. With all forms of celebration canceled and a state of mourning announced, a military funeral was held for the fallen prosecutor that was also attended by President Abdel Fatah EL Sisi.

During the funeral, Sisi pledged to amend laws in order to expedite justice and deal with threats the country is facing at this point.

The assassination of Hisham Barakat has shocked Egyptians and according to some experts adds new tinge to the ongoing crisis in the country. Barakat is the highest official to be targeted over the past 2 decades.

However, as analysts expect and what is evident in statements made by public figures allied with the regime is that the crackdown on the Brotherhood will intensify in reaction to the event.

However, some experts believe the precision and style of attack is consistent with ISIL affiliate the 'Sinai Province' militant group which has carried out similar attacks in the past.

On another front, explosive devices detonated inside a private car near a police station in Cairo's 6 October City on Tuesday, killing three people.

With the very real threat of terrorism and continuation of the political stagnation and polarization, many Egyptians are afraid of what is to come, as the current government is offering no real solutions to the chaos.
