Political will key to Iran nuclear deal: German FM

Germany's foreign minister says a final nuclear deal could be struck between Iran and global powers on Tehran’s nuclear program if the two sides show the necessary political will.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Wednesday that some technical issues remain to be settled between Iran and its negotiating partners for them to seal a widely-anticipated deal on the country’s nuclear activity.

He added that the two sides need to show the required political will to bridge the remaining gaps between Iran and six world powers (P5+1).

“There is a series of complex technical issues which still have to be resolved …Nevertheless, I believe here, too, that we can find solutions if the political will is there,” IRNA quoted Steinmeier as saying in an interview.

The top German diplomat also said the major stumbling blocks in the talks were “the sphere of centrifuge development as well as the modalities for lifting the sanctions.”

US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Wednesday that talks between Iran and the six powers in Vienna are making progress.

"We are working very, very hard and we have some very difficult issues but we believe we're making progress and we're going to continue to work because of that," he said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also said, "We have made progress and we will make progress and we will use every opportunity to make progress."

On Tuesday, Iran and the P5+1 group - the US, Britain, France, Russia and China plus Germany - extended their talks for seven days after the expiration of a June 30 deadline for the conclusion of a final agreement on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program.

Iranian officials say a final deal should conform to the parameters of an agreement reached between Tehran and the P5+1 group in the Swiss city of Lausanne in April.
