Iranian, American officials meet on 1st day of extended N-talks
Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, have met on the first day of the prolonged talks over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program.
The top diplomats met during a 15-minute-long private session in Vienna, Austria, on Wednesday. The two were then joined by the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Agency, Ali Akbar Salehi, the US Energy Secretary, Ernest Moniz, as well as Deputy Iranian Foreign Ministers Abbas Araqchi and Majid Takht-e-Ravanchi, European Union Political Director Helga Schmid, and Wendy Sherman, the US undersecretary of state for political affairs.
Iran and the P5+1 group - the US, Britain, France, Russia and China plus Germany - extended their talks for seven days after the expiration of a June 30 deadline for the conclusion of a final agreement on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program.
Speaking on Wednesday, Araqchi said sticking points still remained between Iran and the P5+1 in drafting the text of the final deal. “There remain issues of difference on which no agreement has been reached yet, and there are certain texts which have not been written down yet. In fact, we are working on them round the clock,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano is due in Iran on Thursday for talks on Tehran’s nuclear program.
During his stay in Iran, the IAEA chief is expected to hold talks with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani.
