Experts say Iran not after nuclear bomb

Experts have debated the implications of a nuclear deal between Iran and the P-five-plus-one group at a conference in Brussels. There was general consensus at the event that a deal is likely and that it would have positive economic and diplomatic effects.

Leading academics from across the world attended this conference in Brussels to debate the likelihood of a deal regarding Iran's nuclear program and the effects that a successful outcome to ongoing negotiations might have. The experts agreed that an accord is likely as talks continue between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany in the Austrian capital Vienna.

The Brussels conference heard that the main sticking points in the negotiations relate to proposals around inspections of Iran's nuclear and military sites, the speed at which Iran can enrich uranium into the future and the timeframe for lifting sanctions currently being imposed against the Tehran. Some believe that if a deal is reached the momentum behind it should immediately be used to promote diplomacy in the Middle East.

Iranian academics participated in the Brussels conference via an audio link. Dr Mostafa Zahrani from the Institute for Political and International Studies, Tehran, made the point that Iran has no interest in developing nuclear weapons as it is a peaceful nation and because the move would encourage other countries in the region to follow suit.

The Iranian negotiating team has made it clear that a deal can be reached so long as the talks are conducted in an atmosphere of mutual respect, excessive demands are not made and all sides demonstrate the necessary political will.
