Afghanistan will not collapse in face of militancy, President Ghani says

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani says no one should think that his violence-wracked country will collapse in the face of Taliban militancy.

Ghani said on Tuesday that the Afghan security forces were strong enough to tackle the Taliban militancy and overcome the massive security challenges facing Afghanistan.

He also urged close coordination among regional countries to tackle militancy, saying an unstable Afghanistan could destabilize the whole region.

The future of Afghanistan is dependent on cooperation from the regional countries, Ghani said.

The remarks come as senior authorities in Kabul have long complained that lack of coordination with Pakistan is undermining the war against al-Qaeda and Taliban-linked groups in the region.

Tensions between Islamabad and Kabul have risen. Afghanistan accuses elements within the Pakistani government for supporting the Taliban militants, while Islamabad blames Kabul for giving refuge to militants on its side of the border.

In recent weeks, the Taliban militants have intensified their attacks on Afghan and foreign forces as part of the so-called spring offensive.

Meanwhile, Afghan government forces have launched a series of security operations against Taliban.

On Tuesday, local Afghan officials said a senior Taliban commander was killed in clashes with security forces in the northeastern province of Takhar. Sources say Mullah Malik is known to have been Taliban’s shadow governor for Darqand district of the same province.

Afghanistan is grappling with insecurity and violence nearly 14 years after the US and its allies invaded the country in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.
