At least two civilians have been killed and dozens of others wounded in a truck bomb attack in Afghanistan’s southern province of Helmand.

The attack took place on Tuesday when assailants detonated explosives on a truck at the gate of the police headquarters in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand.

Provincial police spokesman Farid Ahmad Obaid confirmed the bombing and said that “initial reports show 40 wounded, two killed,” all civilians.

“The blast was very powerful. Most of the wounded people are civilians who were hit by broken glass inside their homes,” provincial spokesman Omar Zhwak also said.

No group or individual has so far claimed responsibility for the deadly blast.

After the blast in Helmand, officials reported a small explosion that targeted a military vehicle in the capital, Kabul. The blast, however, left no casualties.

“A small sticky bomb attached to a military vehicle detonated in western Kabul this morning. Only the car was damaged,” said Kabul police spokesman Ebadullah Karimi Kabul.

The Tuesday explosions came less than two days after a Taliban ambush in the western province of Herat killed 11 soldiers.

Afghanistan has been the scene of violence since 2001, when the US and its allies invaded the country as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.

The US-led military alliance in Afghanistan officially ended its combat mission on December 31, 2014. Insecurity still persists in the war-torn country despite the presence of at least 13,500 foreign troops.
