US white supremacists not threat: Rep. King

US Republican lawmaker Peter King

A Republican lawmaker has disregarded a recent report that suggested white supremacists are a bigger threat to Americans than the ISIL terrorists.

“I totally just disregarded what the New York Times said,” Rep. Peter King said.

The Times published a report on Wednesday based on a study by the New America Foundation that was suggesting since September 11, 2001 attacks, white right-wing terrorists have killed almost twice as many Americans in homegrown attacks than the terrorists have killed.

“Every murder is horrible, but there is no comparison between these white supremacists and an internationally coordinated movement, that’s the New York Times at its worst,” King claimed.

“Just seven years ago, the attempted subway attacks here in New York would have killed hundreds, if not thousands, of people, if that were not intercepted,” King added.

In June, the foundation decided to examine groups “engaged in violent extremist activity” and found that white extremists were by far the most dangerous.

The research pointed out to the recent massacre at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Earlier this month, Dylann Roof, 21, opened fire and killed nine African-American worshippers at the church in Charleston, South Carolina.

A survey that has been conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina and Duke University asked 382 US police departments to list top threats and 74 percent listed anti-government violence, while just 39 percent said “al-Qaeda-inspired” violence.
