Obama not able to defeat ISIL: Analyst

Peck said Rick Perry is right that President Obama is not capable of defeating ISIL.

US presidential hopeful Rick Perry is right that President Barack Obama is not capable of defeating the ISIL Takfiri group in Iraq and Syria, former US Chief of Mission in Iraq Edward Peck says.

Peck made the comments when asked about his opinion regarding recent comments by Perry, mentioning Obama's failure in dealing with threats posed by ISIL.

“He is probably correct that the United States cannot defeat ISIS (ISIL),” Peck told Press TV on Sunday.

Perry made the comments while giving a speech at Denver’s Convention Center as part of the Western Conservative Summit which was held this weekend.

The former Texas governor criticized Obama for taking the US army out of Iraq in 2011 and preparing the grounds for ISIL to terrorize the country.

“The lid can be put back on. The lid should never have been taken off,” he added.

Perry went on to say that Obama’s plan for fighting ISIL has only been to “take a step back” and that is why the White House is “not capable” of defeating the terrorist group.

He also slammed Obama for not taking timely action years ago when ISIL was mainly concentrated in Syria.

Perry said Obama could have stopped ISIL’s gains in Iraq by arming the Kurdish security forces in northern parts of the country.

According to Perry, the solution to ISIL lies within a “coalition effort” which includes US boots on the ground.

The comments are like other views recently expressed by Democratic and Republican politicians who have criticized Obama for not having a specific strategy in combating the terrorists.

Peck concluded his remarks by saying that Washington has tried to fight ISIL in Iraq but its efforts have bore no fruit so far.

“We have tried, we have invested a lot of money, we have lost a lot of American lives, and there have been an awfully large number of Iraqi lives lost in our earlier efforts to stabilize a country that is perhaps not prepared to be stabilized,” Peck said.
