US authorities warn of possible terrorist threats around July 4

The warning of terrorist threat came in an intelligence bulletin issued jointly by the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI and the National Counterterrorism Center.

Local law enforcement officers in the US have been warned of possible terrorist threats around the July 4 holiday, a report says.

The warning came in an intelligence bulletin issued jointly by the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI and the National Counterterrorism Center, CNN reported on Friday.

Although the bulletin has not warned of any active plots which are known, it gives a general warning of heightened threats.

In response to the attacks in France, Tunisia and Kuwait, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson issued a statement pn Friday, saying, "Particularly with the upcoming July 4th holiday here in the United States, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI continue to communicate with state and local law enforcement about what we know and see.”

"We are encouraging all law enforcement to be vigilant and prepared," the statement added. "We will also adjust security measures, seen and unseen, as necessary to protect the American people."

CNN cited some law enforcement officials as saying that terrorist threat is the highest in years.

The FBI and the Justice Department's national security division have, on numerous occasions, arrested and charged extremists believed to be plotting attacks or supporting groups such as ISIL.

The FBI has been increasingly monitoring certain suspects and heightened its surveillance of them.
