One escaped New York prisoner killed, other on the run

Escaped New York Inmate Richard Matt

One of the two convicted murderers who escaped from a prison in New York City has been killed by police and the other is still on the run, according to police officials.

Richard Matt was shot dead by police in woods in Malone that is a few miles from the Canadian border on Friday.

A law enforcement officer “spotted a man in a wooded area” and then “shot and killed a man believed to be Clinton Correctional Facility escapee Richard Matt,” the New York State Police said in a statement.

“A positive identification is still pending,” said the statement.

The other escaped prisoner David Sweat was also involved in a gun battle with police, but there is no report of his situation.

The two murderers broke out of Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, 21 days ago.

Matt was in jail for the kidnapping, torture and hacksaw dismemberment of his former boss in 1997. Sweat was also in the prison for killing a sheriff's deputy.

The New York State Police had earlier announced that the two escaped prisoners might have headed to Canada.
