Hezbollah kills 9 terrorists, wounds several in Qalamoun
Fighters of the Lebanese resistance movement, Hezbollah, have killed at least nine terrorists of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front in the strategic border region of Qalamoun.
The incident occurred near the Syria-Lebanon border on Friday, when Takfiri militants went through the landmines planted by Hezbollah and shortly afterwards were targeted by Hezbollah mortars. Several militants were also wounded during the attack.
According to reports, the terrorists were attempting to launch an ambush against Hezbollah positions in the eastern Lebanese city of Maaraboun when they passed through the minefield. The sounds of the explosions alerted the nearby Hezbollah fighters and prompted them to shell the terrorists.
Hezbollah fighters together with Syrian army units have recently managed to seize control of several strategic hilltops and crossings in the border areas between Lebanon and Syria especially in the Qalamoun region.
Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis fueled by Takfiri groups since March 2011. The conflict has reportedly claimed more than 222,000 lives since then.
The violence has also forced over 3.8 million Syrians to take refuge in neighboring countries, namely Jordan and Lebanon. More than 7.2 million others have been displaced within Syria, according to the United Nations.
