Afghan security forces have recaptured a restive district from Taliban in the country’s troubled eastern province of Nuristan, local officials say.

Abdul Qauom, the provincial governor in Nuristan, said that Waygal district was retaken by Afghan forces on Friday evening.

The fierce fighting over the district in the remote province along the country's mountainous border with Pakistan claimed the lives of at least 18 policemen and wounded 20 others, Qauom added.

The Taliban terrorist group also said in a statement that seven of its militants lost their lives after Afghan government forces launched the attack, which began on Thursday night.

The district was retaken just a day after it fell to the Taliban following a deadly assault. Sources said earlier that the Afghan government troops had no choice but to retreat from the area after they did not receive reinforcement.

Meanwhile, Sonatullah Timor, the spokesman for the Takhar provincial government, said that at least three policemen were killed after the Taliban attacked a police checkpoint in Khwaja Ghar district in the northeastern province on Thursday night.

Timor also noted that at least seven Taliban militants were killed in the ensuing violent clashes.

Taliban militants have stepped up their attacks against government, foreign, and civilian targets since they began their annual so-called spring offensive in late April.

Afghanistan is experiencing violence and bloodshed nearly 14 years after the United States and its NATO allies invaded the country in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.
