News in Brief

1. ISIL terrorists have executed at least 23 Kurds including women and children in a village near the Syrian city of Kobani. The terror group has now re-entered the border city after losing it in January. The ISIL has also captured parts of the Syrian city of Hasakah.

2. Al-Qaeda-linked terrorists and allied militants have launched an offensive to take the city of Dara’a in southern Syria. Nusra Front terrorists attacked the city with mortars and gas cylinders. Most of Dara’a province is in control of anti-Damascus militants but the government has always held the central city.

3. Iran and the P-5+1 group of countries are preparing for a final round of talks over Tehran’s nuclear program. Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will arrive in the Austrian capital Vienna on Saturday morning to join his deputies. The last-ditch talks come ahead of a looming June 30 deadline.

4. Greece and its international creditors resume a new round of talks aimed at resolving Athens’ debt crisis. A top eurozone official says there is a new proposal on reforms that Athens should make in return for loans. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras rejected the reforms put forth by lenders during Monday talks.

5. NATO warns there’s still a risk for resumption of heavy fighting in eastern Ukraine as the army and pro-Russia forces violate the February ceasefire every now and then. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also accused Moscow of backing pro-Russia militias in eastern Ukraine. He said Russia must immediately end its support.

6. Saudi warplanes continue pounding Yemen for the ninety second day. The latest airstrikes targeted the city of Ataq in Shabwah province. Fighter jets have also bombarded Sa’ada and Hajjah provinces. The Saudi onslaught has left over 4,400 people dead since it began on March 26.

7. The death toll in Pakistan's heat wave has soared to over one-thousand, with thousands more still being treated despite a gradual drop in temperatures. Most of the deaths were reported in the port city of Karachi in Sindh Province. The local administration in Sindh has declared a state of emergency.

8. South Korea has announced two new deaths from the MERS virus in the country. The overall death toll has now reached 29 while 77 people are still being treated, some in critical condition. The MERS outbreak in South Korea began in May.
