Iranian runner wins 100m race in Thai event

Iranian athlete Hassan Taftian has won the first title in the 100-meter running contest in the second edition of the Asian Grand Prix Series in Thailand.

The 22-year-old athlete clocked 10.41 seconds at the men’s 100-meter final in the central Thai town of Pathum Thani, located 29 kilometers (18 miles) north of the capital, Bangkok, on Thursday and stood on top of the podium.

Taftian had earlier clocked 10.24 seconds in another 100-meter final competition of the tournament in Bangkok on Tuesday.

Also on Thursday, Iranian sprinter Sajjad Hashemi Ahangari competed in the men’s 400 meters. He finished with a time of 45.98 seconds to land in the second spot. Hashemi Ahangari beat his previous best time of 46.00.

The Iranian athletics team clinched 3 gold and 2 bronze medals on the first day of the second edition of the Asian Grand Prix Series on Tuesday.

Iranian high jumper Keyvan Ghanbarzadeh, who holds the national record with his personal best of 2.26 meters registered in the southwestern Iranian city of Shiraz in April 2012, snatched the gold medal with 2.26 meters.

His Syrian and Chinese competitors took the silver and bronze medals in the final high jump content.

Hashemi Ahangari was another gold medalist for Iran, who clocked 46.72 seconds in the men’s 400-meter final encounter.

Meanwhile, Iranian sportswoman Sepideh Tavakkoli finished third in the women’s long jump competitions, and brought home the first bronze medal.

Iranian runner Amir Moradi also won the bronze medal in the men's 800-meter section.

The second edition of the Asian Grand Prix Series opened in Thailand on June 25 and will run till 29. The first leg of the tournament started in the capital. The second leg is currently underway in Pathum Thani, while the third leg will be staged in Chanthaburi.

While sportsmen compete in 100m, 400m, 800m, 110mH, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay long jump, high jump, shot put and javelin throw competitions, women vie against each other in 100m, 400m, 800m, 100mH, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay (field) – triple jump, high jump, discus throw and shot put contests.

A cash prize of $1,500, $800 and $500 will be awarded to the athletes who finish first to third in individual events.
