ISIL was created, fueled and strengthened by US behavior: Analyst
US military interventions in the Middle East along with Washington’s foreign policy in the region paved the way for the creation and expansion of the ISIL terrorist group, an American activist, blogger and author says.
“The problem with ISIS is that it is created and fueled and strengthened by US behavior,” David Swanson told Press TV on Tuesday, using another acronym for ISIL.
“The invasion and occupation of Iraq created the ground for ISIS, [a well as] the dismemberment of the Iraqi army, the brutalization and imprisonment of Iraqis who would become leaders of ISIS, the ongoing attacks on Iraq at the desire and the behest of ISIS that are fueling recruitment for ISIS,” Swanson said.
The ISIL terrorist group, with members from several Western countries, controls parts of Syria and Iraq, conducting heinous crimes against different ethnic and religious communities in the Arab countries.
Recent setbacks in Iraq and Syria have raised serious questions about President Barack Obama’s strategy against ISIL terrorists, who currently control some areas of both countries.
ISIL launched an offensive in Iraq in June 2014, and took control of Mosul, before sweeping through parts of the country’s heartland. The terrorists had seized parts of neighboring Syria before beginning their terror operations in Iraq.
Recently declassified US intelligence documents have revealed that the United States and some of its allies, including Turkey, had foreseen and facilitated the rise of the ISIL terrorist group in Syria as a counterweight to President Bashar al-Assad.
Swanson also warned about the US policy of expanding the NATO military alliance to Russian borders amid increasing tensions between Washington and Moscow over the conflict in Ukraine.
“The people of Europe are largely against this, there is no justification not just for enlarging NATO, but for NATO’s continued existence,” he said.“This is risking World War III between the two nuclear powers of the world.”
His comments come after the Pentagon pledged to help NATO beef up its rapid response force, citing threats from Russia.
US Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Monday Washington would contribute weapons, aircraft and personnel to help the Western military alliance respond more quickly to threats in Eastern Europe.
