Veteran Cincinnati police officer shot dead

Police investigate the scene of a shooting in the Madisonville neighborhood of Cincinnati on June 19, 2015.

The Cincinnati Police Department has announced that a veteran police officer has been killed during a gunfight with a suspect in Madisonville.

The shootout happened on Friday morning and the suspect is also dead.

Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell confirmed that 27-year veteran Sonny Kim was killed.

He added that the suspect is Trepierre Hummons, without giving further information about the incident.

The police officer had been wearing body armor, but he was struck in the chest, according to Blackwell.

Mayor John Cranley said in a statement that “today is a tragic day for all Cincinnatians.”

The incident comes several days after Cincinnati police released a plan for dealing with a recent increase of gun violence in the city.

Gun violence has been highlighted again in the United States after a white man killed nine black people in Charleston, South Carolina.

Dylann Storm Roof killed the black people during a prayer ceremony at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Following Wednesday’s shooting, US President Barack Obama said such “mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries.”

"I don't need to be constrained about the emotions tragedies like this raise," Obama said. "I've had to make comments like this too many times. Communities like this have had to endure tragedies like this too many times.”
