UNICEF: Children raped, castrated, thrown into fires in South Sudan

Africa

The UN Children’s Fund, UNICEF has accused South Sudan's warring sides of committing horrific atrocities against children.

UNICEF chief Anthony Lake says such crimes include castration, rape and tying children together before slitting their throats. Lake noted that some 13,000 children have been aggressively recruited into armed groups of both warring sides. He further cautioned that the brutality against children has reached a new level. The head of UNICEF called for immediate termination of violence against innocent people. South Sudan plunged into violence in December 2013. Fighting between troops loyal to President Salva Kiir and defectors led by his former deputy, Riek Machar, has killed tens of thousands of people.
