Yemeni army forces and popular committees have launched an attack on Saudi military bases in the kingdom’s southwestern city of Jizan.

The raid was carried out late on Friday night in response to a fresh Saudi airstrike that claimed the lives of four civilians in the city of Baqim in Yemen’s northwestern Sa’ada province.

Also on Friday night, Saudi fighter jets pounded the international airport in the Yemeni capital Sana’a.

The latest Saudi aggression came hours after negotiations between various Yemeni groups in the Swiss city of Geneva ended without reaching an agreement.

In a press conference after the end of the UN-brokered negotiations, the Ansarullah movement’s delegation censured “deliberate obstructions from certain sides” during the peace talks, saying the Saudi-backed group refused to engage in “profound issues”.

“This is in order for the Yemenis not to come up with clear solutions and in order for the Saudi aggression and the siege imposed on the Yemeni people to continue,” they added.

The Ansarullah delegation, however, rejected reports that the Geneva talks ended in total failure, noting that the recent negotiations were in fact the beginning of a political process to bridge the gaps between warring factions in the country.

The delegation also welcomed calls by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for a humanitarian truce in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia launched its air aggression against Yemen on March 26 - without a UN mandate - in a bid to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and to restore power to the country’s fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a staunch ally of Riyadh.

The UN says at least 2,600 people have been killed and 11,000 others wounded due to the conflict in Yemen since March 19.
