Wales has highest child poverty in UK

A new report reveals that one-third of children in Wales live in poverty.

A new report has revealed that one in three children in Wales live in poverty, the highest percentage of child poverty in the UK.

Compiled by the Welsh Assembly’s communities, the report also says that some 23% of Welsh people live in poverty.

It has also revealed that an increasing number of people are resorting to food banks as a result of the grinding poverty. The number of people referring to food banks has doubled between April 2013 and March 2014.

The report has particularly slammed the Labour-led Welsh government for not making progress in reducing poverty.

Meanwhile, the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) has foretasted that child poverty in Wales could rise by about a third in the coming five years.

A London-based political commentator believes low wages are the main cause of the increasing poverty in Wales.

“The root cause of poverty in Wales is low wages. The majority of families who are in poverty have at least one member of family in work and the simple fact is that they are receiving too little pay to make ends meet, “Chris Bambery told Press TV on Friday.

He also blamed the government’s austerity measures as a contributing factor.

“These austerity measures are adding to the pressure on hardworking families struggling to make end meet,” Bambery concluded.
