Iran’s national football team has been held to a 1-all draw against Turkmenistan during its first 2018 World Cup qualification match.

The group D match was held in Toplumy Stadium in Daşoguz in northern Turkmenistan on Tuesday.

Iran’s winger Sardar Azmoun scored the opener just four minutes into the match, but the hosts leveled the scoring in the dying minutes of the first half thanks to a deep cross behind the Iranian defense line by Turkmen midfielder Ruslan Mingazow.

Carlos Queiroz’ men are now standing in the third spot of the Group D of the Asian section of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification. Guam and Oman are leading the table while Turkmenistan and India are rooted to the bottom.

Iran is scheduled to take on Guam on September 3, 2015.
