China has called on the protesters in Hong Kong not to play into the hands of extremists and refrain from using violent acts ahead of a legilative vote on a political reform package.

“The radical opposition camp has recently resorted to despicable means... and are engaged in extreme violent activities,” the deputy commissioner for Beijing’s foreign affairs office in Hong Kong said on Tuesday.

“We hope that the moderate pan-democrats will see through the true face of radical forces,” said Song Ruan.

Earlier, police in Hong Kong, a special administrative region of China, arrested ten people on suspicion of making explosives. Police said one of the detained suspects has confessed to being a member of a radical local group.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s legislature has raised the level of security alert, saying the legislative council complex may be stormed by “radical groups” in the coming days.

Pro-government groups as well as protesters are scheduled to stage rallies outside the complex on Wednesday as the bill to choose a next chief executive for Hong Kong is to be debated.

Last year, Beijing called for the vetting of nominees for the position. The decision was met with mass rallies and camp-ins across Hong Kong, which paralyzed some parts of its business district for months.
