A group of people in Italy have held a rally to condemn the Western economic sanctions that have been imposed against Russia over the crisis in Ukraine.

The “No sanctions against Russia” protest was staged in the northern city of Bologna, where protesters gathered in a square near the central train station of the city, Stefano Bonilauri, leader of the political movement “Socialismo Patriottico” told Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency on Saturday.

“About 60 people attended our demonstration. The majority of them were Italians. The aim of the event is to make it clear to the government that we are against sanctions,” he said.

The protest came ahead of the June 25-26 summit of the European Union (EU) in Brussels, where the European leaders are expected to make a final decision on the potential extension of the anti-Russia sanctions. The current sanctions will expire in July.

Pointing to a potential renewal of the bans, Bonilauri said, “We believe that this measure is absolutely unjustified and groundless. It’s a serious violation of the sovereignty and the right for the free development of both Russia and Italy as well as of other countries.”

Russia has been targeted by a series of sanctions over the past months by Brussels and Washington, which accuse Moscow of supporting pro-Russia forces in the volatile eastern regions of Ukraine.

However, the Kremlin has rejected the claims and slapped bans on some food imports from the US, the EU, Norway, Australia and Canada in a tit-for-tat move. Moscow has also issued a blacklist of politicians from the 28-nation bloc, barring them from traveling to the Russian Federation.
