Fresh clashes in eastern Ukraine kill 2
At least two people have been killed and more than a dozen others injured in fresh clashes between the Ukrainian army and pro-Russia forces in 24 hours, officials say.
Eduard Aleksandrovich Basurin, a spokesman for the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), said on Friday that as a result of shelling in the past 24 hours, two civilians have been killed and two injured in the Kuibyshevsky region of the eastern city of Donetsk.
The DPR defense spokesman added that seven people were also injured in the Kyivsky district of Donetsk as well as the city of Gorlovka. The DPR Defense Ministry had earlier announced that the Ukrainian army shelling rocked the volatile eastern region 36 times during the past 24 hours, Interfax news agency reported.
Also on Friday, ten Ukrainian soldiers were wounded in the country’s southeast, according to Andriy Lysenko, spokesman for Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council. No serviceman has been killed in the fighting, Lysenko added at a press briefing in the capital, Kiev.
Meeting of Contact Group
Meanwhile, subgroups of Ukraine’s trilateral Contact Group are expected to hold two meetings in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, in the upcoming fortnight, said Denis Vladimirovich Pushilin, the DPR chief negotiator in Ukraine peace talks.
Three subgroups within the Contact Group, comprising the representatives of the Ukrainian government, Russia, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), “will meet on June 16,” according to Pushilin. “The Contact Group will hold its meeting on June 16 as well,” Pushilin said, adding, “the subgroup for the economy will meet on June 23.”
Eastern Ukraine has been scarred by turmoil which first erupted in March 2014, when people in Ukraine’s Black Sea peninsula of Crimea voted for rejoining Russia. The violence exacerbated in April 2014, after Kiev dispatched troops to the eastern Ukrainian regions of Luhansk and Donetsk to suppress pro-Russians. The two conflicting sides signed a ceasefire deal in Minsk on February 11-12, known as the Minsk II agreement, which has been shaky.
