An Iranian deputy energy minister says the country has indigenized the electrical industry know-how and achieved self-sufficiency in building power plants.

Speaking to reporters in the central Iranian city of Arak on Wednesday, Ali Akbar Mohajeri, deputy energy minister for research and human resources affairs, said the Islamic Republic is not only capable of constructing domestic power plants, but is also able to build power plants in other countries in the Middle East.

The official noted that Iran has also acquired technical know-how related to the electrical industry and is ready to transfer this technology to other regional countries.

Mohajeri said the Energy Ministry pursues a long-term strategy to achieve the goals of the country’s Vision Plan by 2025.

He added that the ministry has divided its operations into five major fields of electricity and energy, water resources, water and wastewater, education and research, as well as human resources and maintenance of the electrical industry.

The official said two research institutes affiliated to the Energy Ministry are implementing 26 major research projects which are aimed at solving the existing problems of the sector.

Earlier in March, Homayoun Haeri, the managing director of Iran Power Generation and Transmission Company (TAVANIR), announced that Iran's current electricity production capacity stands at above 73,000 megawatts, turning the country into the electricity export hub of the Middle East.

According to deputy energy minister, Houshang Fallahian, Iran has started building new power stations to generate 10,000 megawatts of electricity at a cost of six billion euros.

The country is also planning to produce 20,000 megawatts of nuclear power over the next 20 years.

Iran's first nuclear power plant in the southern port city of Bushehr joined the national grid in September 2011.
