Foreign backed Takfiri terrorists have overrun a key Syrian military base in the country’s southern province of Dara’a.

The militants took full control of the 52nd Brigade base in Dara’a province following 24 hours of severe clashes, said militant spokesman Major Essam al-Rayes on Tuesday.

At least 2,000 militants took part in the "short and quick" assault, he added.

The base is strategically situated near the main highway that connects the capital city Damascus to the country’s southern border with Jordan.

According to Lebanon’s al-Manar TV network, a senior Takfiri field commander was killed in the battle.

The Associated Press reported that the Western-backed Free Syrian Army was responsible for the attack.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has confirmed the base’s fall, adding that during the clashes 14 militants and 20 government forces were killed and that government troops retreated to the nearby village of al-Dara.

Earlier in the day, the UK-based monitoring group announced that since the beginning of the crisis in Syria at least 230,618 people have been killed, 69,494 of whom were civilians.

Syria fell into chaos in March 2011, when Takfiri militants launched their campaign of terror on the country with the support of Western powers and their regional allies, including Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
